If you live in Arkansas you probably heard about the recent puppy mill bust in Logan County. With the help of the HSUS, over 300 dogs were seized from the property and transported to different shelters from Texas to Colorado. About 30 dogs ended up at here at FAS, and I had the privilege of meeting them on Monday afternoon. Here are 2 of their precious faces.
The future is looking bright for these guys! The shelter has already received lots of calls from people interested in adopting one of the rescued dogs. They won’t be available until April 8 and the shelter is not accepting any early adoption applications.
I am curious who reads my blog and I would like to know a little more about you. Where do you live? What do you do for a living? How many pets you have and what are their names? How did you find my blog? I would also like to know 1 random/weird/silly fact about you. Leave a comment and tell me about yourself!
I’ll go first…
I live in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
I have a degree in Interior Design and I work for an architecture firm 30 hours a week. I’m an aspiring pet photographer.
I have 5 pets. Maggie (Shar-pei mix), Jonah (Pitbull mix) ,Tina (Chihuahua mix) and 2 cats named Oliver and Annalise. They are all rescues and they run our house. :)
My silly fact is that I LOVE watching cheesy Lifetime movies on Sundays. They’re just so bad, they’re good.
Whoever shares the funniest or most random fact about themselves will win a box of 20 note cards with one of my fur babies on the front of the cards. The inside is blank which makes them perfect for writing thank you notes, birthday cards, or get well cards. White envelopes are included! Stay tuned…I’ll announce the winner on Friday!
I’m so sad right now. We went out to runs some errands this afternoon and when we came home our little baby squirrel had passed away. He seemed fine this morning. He even drank a half tablespoon of milk before we left. We have no idea what might have happened. He was very active yesterday and the day before. We got him a small cage at the pet store and he seemed to like it. He was learning to climb on the bars a little. We think maybe he had some internal damage after being carried in Maggie’s mouth, or maybe he got hurt when he fell from his nest which is up very high in a tree. I wanted to raise him until he could eat solid food and then set him free. It was so neat having him here and feeding him with his little bottle was so much fun. I know that whatever happened to him was probably out of our hands, but I’m very still sad.
I was sitting in my office around 10:00 Wednesday night when Maggie walked into the room and dropped a wet rodent on the carpet. I immediately squealed and reached for my phone. I called Neill and asked if he could please come remove the dead mouse in my house (he only lives a block away, and what are boyfriends for?). While I was waiting for Neill I noticed the little guy’s belly was still moving up and down. I got a closer look and realized it was a not a mouse, but instead a baby squirrel and he was breathing! We put him in a shoe box with a towel on top of a heating pad set on low. He was pretty lifeless and wet from dog slobber. There were no wounds that we could see, but we figured Maggie might have damaged his insides. I honestly didn’t think he would make it through the night, but he did!
After speaking with a very helpful nurse at the animal emergency clinic, we decided to put him back outside and see if his mom would come get him. The experts say that human scent won’t matter to the mom. The vet I spoke to said that as long as the baby is warm and heathy the mom will take him back. We set him under the tree he fell from and hoped for the best. I glanced out the window about 45 minutes later and saw 2 adult squirrels hanging out in the tree above. I thought one of them might be the mom, but they couldn’t have cared less about the little baby squirrel on the ground. We decided to bring him in because when I noticed a hawk perching up in the tree. I couldn’t let him be hawk lunch! We thought about putting him back outside after the hawk left, but it started pouring rain. He is now safe inside his shoe box home and he just had 2 full droppers of puppy milk for dinner.
He can’t really walk yet so he drags himself around with his front claws to get comfortable.
We are still getting the hang of feeding him. It’s so cute how he grabs the dropper when he gets excited.
Does anyone have any experience raising baby squirrels? We like having him around for now, but we really don’t need a squirrel for a pet and I know he would be happier in the wild. He sure is cute!!!
Mod-Dog has the coolest stuff for contemporary dog owners, including original prints, notecards, and dog jewelry. I am loving these notecards with Tina on them. :) I’m so excited to be included in the Mod-Dog pet photography directory called Snap My Pet. It’s a regional directory for people to search for pet photographers in their area. There are some VERY talented photographers listed in this directory and I am honored to be included. Thanks Kari!
My mom and I recently babysat my little cousin Ava. Just for fun, we brought out my mom’s old costume jewelry box and Ava loved looking through all of that sparkly stuff. She was fascinated with this one red necklace and she would not let us have it back. She just held it and stared at the way it sparkled in the light. Then she went from looking at it to chewing on it. I remembered my camera was in my car and took these right before her parents picked her up. Isn’t she cute?!
