I’m trying to learn to get a better variety of shots when I photograph a dog. I seem to end up with lots of portrait style photos, where their whole face fills up the frame. Those are good, but I also like shots like these that have a more interesting composition. I didn’t look through the viewfinder when I took these photos. I just held my camera down at waist level and pointed it at Jonah…and I think I like what I got.

I love a shiny button nose on a dog.

I got this shot of Oliver today while he was watching squirrels through the kitchen window.

“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.”
-Mahatma Gandhi
First offense animal cruelty legislation has finally come to Arkansas. On January 14, Senator Sue Madison of Fayetteville introduced SB77, which would make it a felony to torture a dog, cat, or horse on the first offense. The bill defines “torture” as neglect, mistreatment, or abandonment. The bill contains several other helpful provisions, including making cockfighting a felony. On January 22, SB77 passed the Senate 34-0. On January 28, it passed the House 88-9-1. The bill has been sent to the Governor’s office, and Governor Beebe has scheduled a bill signing ceremony for Wednesday, February 4, at 2 pm at the State Capitol in Little Rock. This is a huge victory for our state and it has taken years for this law to finally pass. People who abuse animals may now face jail time. If if the abuse takes place in front of a child, the penalty is even more severe. Anyone who is found guilty of torturing an animal will be ordered to complete a psychiatric or psychological evaluation and possibly counseling. I’m so happy about this legislation and also very proud that we have a Senator dedicated to this issue. Click here to read the bill.
