Last year my best friend Jamie came up with the idea to have a holiday supply drive to benefit shelter animals. We worked together and gathered items for homeless dogs and cats at FAS. We took 2 car loads of donated items to the shelter the day before Christmas. We hope for even more items this year! Please look around your house and see what you might be able to get rid of. Clean out your linen closet for old towels and blankets. The dogs don’t care if their blankets have holes in them, they’re just glad to have a blanket! If you come across a “buy 1 get 1 free” on laundry detergent or bleach, please consider giving the free one to the shelter. Also, Walgreens has $10 dog beds right now and I know that some little shelter dog would really appreciate a soft bed to sleep in. Please see the list below for other items they need.

Give me a call at 479-871-2138 and I will be glad to pick up your donations. Thanks in advance for your help!

This young Beagle named Hawkeye stole my heart when we met last weekend. He was gentle, sweet, affectionate, and calm. Not to mention house trained and leash trained! If you can give this sweet dog a home, he will be forever grateful and return the favor with lots of love, companionship, and loyalty.

If you have room for Hawkeye, please contact the Fayetteville Animal Shelter at 444-3456. Don’t wait…do it now!

These are the favors we gave out at our wedding. We set up a small table with a photo of each of our dogs and a sign explaining that we made a donation to the Fayetteville Animal Shelter. We wanted to do something that was important to us, so we donated $1 a guest to our local shelter. There was a basket full of these for guests to take home to their dog. The creative people at Bigwag Dog Bakery made them for us. The biscuits were individually packaged in their own plastic baggie and displayed in a pretty basket. These were way more fun than some generic favor like mints with our initials on them. :)

Spring is kitten season at the shelter. Looking to adopt a kitten? Well now is the time! Yesterday at the shelter I saw a cage full of these little guys. There is nothing cuter than a tiny kitten.

Maggie somehow lost her way home and ended up at the shelter. Now she needs a forever home! Sometimes I find it hard to describe a dog when I only spend 5-10 minutes with it, but I’ll try my best to sum her up. Maggie’s personality is on the calm side, and she is definitely a smart and observant little dog. She pays close attention and listens well to the humans around her, almost like she is trying to please them. She walks well on a leash and knows how to sit on command! She is physically an adorable little girl. Those big ears give her so much character. Isn’t she cute?!!! I think she would make a great couch buddy to watch TV with. She would also be a perfect walking partner since she doesn’t pull on her leash.
Please call the FAS at 444-3456 for more information on Maggie. (UPDATE 5.05.09 ADOPTED)

On a happy note…Hampton and Mushi from previous posts both found homes. That’s 2 more lives saved!
Quiet,
timid,

sweet Mushi. (UPDATE 4.22.09 ADOPTED)

Currently available for adoption at Fayetteville Animal Shelter.
I have been photographing dogs and uploading them to Petfinder for 1 year this May. At first I would always feel a little depressed after I would leave. It made me so sad to meet all the unwanted dogs. Then while going through their photos at home, I would think to myself how smart, how cute, or how painfully shy a certain dog was. If only I had a farm with lots of land, I’d get them all!
I quickly realized there are so many happy endings at the shelter. Whenever I see one of these signs I say, “Awww…look you got a home! Yay!” On Monday I saw this sign on a pen and when I looked down to see the dog, it was Dottie, a Pitbull who had been at FAS for many weeks. There she stood, wagging her tail. It made my heart happy.

Today I’d like to introduce you to some FAS dogs who are waiting to go home.

If you live in Arkansas you probably heard about the recent puppy mill bust in Logan County. With the help of the HSUS, over 300 dogs were seized from the property and transported to different shelters from Texas to Colorado. About 30 dogs ended up at here at FAS, and I had the privilege of meeting them on Monday afternoon. Here are 2 of their precious faces.

The future is looking bright for these guys! The shelter has already received lots of calls from people interested in adopting one of the rescued dogs. They won’t be available until April 8 and the shelter is not accepting any early adoption applications.
I was sitting in my office around 10:00 Wednesday night when Maggie walked into the room and dropped a wet rodent on the carpet. I immediately squealed and reached for my phone. I called Neill and asked if he could please come remove the dead mouse in my house (he only lives a block away, and what are boyfriends for?). While I was waiting for Neill I noticed the little guy’s belly was still moving up and down. I got a closer look and realized it was a not a mouse, but instead a baby squirrel and he was breathing! We put him in a shoe box with a towel on top of a heating pad set on low. He was pretty lifeless and wet from dog slobber. There were no wounds that we could see, but we figured Maggie might have damaged his insides. I honestly didn’t think he would make it through the night, but he did!
After speaking with a very helpful nurse at the animal emergency clinic, we decided to put him back outside and see if his mom would come get him. The experts say that human scent won’t matter to the mom. The vet I spoke to said that as long as the baby is warm and heathy the mom will take him back. We set him under the tree he fell from and hoped for the best. I glanced out the window about 45 minutes later and saw 2 adult squirrels hanging out in the tree above. I thought one of them might be the mom, but they couldn’t have cared less about the little baby squirrel on the ground. We decided to bring him in because when I noticed a hawk perching up in the tree. I couldn’t let him be hawk lunch! We thought about putting him back outside after the hawk left, but it started pouring rain. He is now safe inside his shoe box home and he just had 2 full droppers of puppy milk for dinner.

He can’t really walk yet so he drags himself around with his front claws to get comfortable.

We are still getting the hang of feeding him. It’s so cute how he grabs the dropper when he gets excited.

Does anyone have any experience raising baby squirrels? We like having him around for now, but we really don’t need a squirrel for a pet and I know he would be happier in the wild. He sure is cute!!!
